asked the Secretary of State for Energy whether he will consider sponsoring additional research into improving the efficiency and environmental acceptability of coal as power station fuel.

The nationalised energy industries are already spending more than £40 million per year on research and development on clean use of coal in power generation. We believe this is the right level of effort.
