HC Deb 16 June 1986 vol 99 c413W
Mr. Kaufman

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if, taking account of the experience of the police in dealing with the unroadworthy vehicles belonging to members of the hippy convoy, he now intends to instruct the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis to take similar action against unroadworthy vehicles in London; and if he will call for reports from all chief constables on the action they are taking on this matter.

Mr. Giles Shaw

No. The enforcement of road traffic legislation is an operational matter for individual chief officers of police.

Mr. Kaufman

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the chief constable of Hampshire about the total cost to provide funds for the police operation to disperse the hippy convoy.

Mr. Giles Shaw

Yes, and I will reply as soon as possible.
