HC Deb 16 June 1986 vol 99 c467W
62. Mr. Freud

asked the Minister for the Arts what representations he has had from the Arts Council and other bodies about the operation of charitable status in the subsidised theatre; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Luce

I am aware of the strong concerns that have been expressed about the treatment of charities, but have received no specific representations about the operation of charitable status in the subsidised theatre.

My right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer stated on 4 June that he does not now intend to proceed with two features of the original proposals in the Finance Bill — the distinction between "private indirect" and other charities; and the possible restriction of tax relief where the charity accumulates income.
