§ Mr. Walden[pursuant to his reply, 3 June 1986, c. 480.]: The percentage changes in the funding of each university by the University Grants Committee in its basic recurrent and equipment grants between 1980–81 and 1986–87, excluding those amounts representing compensation for changes in the level of home student fees, compensation for redundancy and early retirement, provision for capital in recurrent expenditure, local authority rates and additions made for information technology and new blood programmes is given in column (a). Columns (b) and (c) gives the comparable percentage figures in real terms measured by the GDP deflator (b) including and (c) excluding additions made for information technology and new blood posts. The percentage changes shown will be in part the consequence of the withdrawal of the overseas student subsidy and to the extent that these losses have been made up by increased fee income will not accurately reflect the changes in the universities' financial position.
