HC Deb 09 June 1986 vol 99 cc33-4W
Mr. Craigen

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the number of male and female police surgeons, respectively, presently attached to each police authority in Scotland.

Mr. John MacKay

I understand that the numbers of police surgeons presently employed or retained by each police authority are as follows:

Force Male Female Total
Central 6 6
Dumfries and Galloway 1 1
Fife 6 6
Grampian 4 4
Lothian and Borders 11 11
Northern* 15 1 16
Strathclyde† 107 3 110
Tayside 32 4 36
* Other doctors are available on a payment per call-out basis.
† The figures for Strathclyde, including the breakdown by sex, are approximate.

I am aware that, in the light of the guidance contained in the circular on the investigation of complaints of sexual assault which my Department issued to chief constables in November 1985, authorities are making efforts to recruit more female police surgeons.
