§ Mr. Peter Bruinvelsasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make an extra-statutory concession to exempt from income tax car mileage allowance paid to hon. Members in respect of travel from Westminister to their homes within a 20-mile radius of Westminister after 11 pm on days the House does not rise until that time or later.
§ Mr. Norman LamontThe general rule is that tax is payable on mileage allowances paid for travel between home and work, and it would not be appropriate to introduce a special exemption for hon. Members in respect of travel between Westminister and their homes.
