Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will list the numbers of long-term unemployed in the Province at the latest date and the comparable figures for May 1979; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Boyson

At 10 April 1986, 60,868 claimants had been continuously unemployed for more than one year in Northern Ireland. At April 1979 (figures for May are not available), 19,916 unemployed people had been registered at employment service jobmarkets for more than one year.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what was the level of youth unemployment in the Province at the latest date; and what were the figures for May 1979.

At 10 April 1986, 47,116 unemployment claimants in Northern Ireland were under 25 years old. At April 1979 (figures for May are not available), 22,469 unemployed people aged under 25 were registered at employment service jobmarkets in Northern Ireland.

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many job vacancies there were in the Province at the latest date; and what was the figure for May 1979.

Dr. Boyson

At 4 April 1985 there were 2,206 unfilled vacancies for adults and 576 for young people (under age 18) at employment service jobmarkets in Northern Ireland. At May 1979 there were 1,558 unfilled vacancies for adults and 306 for young people.
