§ (i) Standardised Mortality Ratios are the ratios of mortality rates in each social class to the average for men of all working ages, after allowing for differences between their age structures.
980WA§ (ii) The Decennial Supplement figures in columns (1) and (3) are compiled from the occupations of deceased persons as recorded on death certificates, and the occupations of the population as recorded in the censuses of population. The Longitudinal Study figures in columns (2) and (4) are based on the death rates of a 1 per cent. sample of the population using their occupations as recorded in the censuses; these figures are subject to sampling errors.
§ (iii) In columns (1) and (2). the Social Classes are based on the 1970 Classification of Occupations. In columns (3) and (4) they are based on the 1980 Classification of Occupations. The figures in column (3) are subject to bias and do not give reliable estimates of mortality by social class, particularly for Class V.
§ (iv) Working ages are defined as follows:
