HL Deb 28 July 1986 vol 479 c711WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Why they are seeking to prevent the publication of the memoirs of Mr. Peter Wright in Australia.

The Lord Chancellor (Lord Hailsham of Saint Marylebone)

If the Security Service is to operate effectively it must be and must be seen to be leak proof. It is of particular importance that officers and former officers in the service should not make unauthorised disclosures to outsiders. Her Majesty's Government have therefore taken such steps as they have been advised are available to them to seek to prevent the publication of Mr. Wright's unauthorised memoirs in Australia.
