§ Mr. Greg Knight
asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department when he will designate under the Safety of Sports Grounds Act 1975 sports stadia and grounds in England and Wales to implement recommendation 2 of the final report of the Popplewell inquiry.
§ Mr. Hurd
I have made an order which will shortly be laid before the House to designate a total of 52 sports grounds in England and Wales where there is accommodation for more than 10,000 spectators, including 26 grounds used for association football, three used for rugby league, 16 used for rugby union and seven used for cricket. The effect will be to require the responsible persons in all cases to apply for safety certificates from the appropriate local authorities if they wish to admit spectators to the grounds. The order will come into operation on 23 August. Its provisions have been drawn to the attention of the clubs concerned.
