Mr. Dobson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give for each special health authority and for each year since 1979, the number of (a) medical staff and (b) nursing staff and (c) ancillary staff, expressing these figures both in terms of actual numbers of employees

I assume the hon. Member is referring to the special health authorities responsible for the management of the London post-graduate teaching hospitals. Such information as is available for each of these special health authorities is shown in table 1. Information on numbers of staff in the nursing and midwifery and ancillary staff groups is not available for all the years requested. Estimated changes in nursing and midwifery staff whole-time equivalents between 1979 and 1985, adjusted for the effect of the change of working hours during 1980, are given in table 2.

1. Includes Hospital Practitioners, Part-time Medical/Dental Officers and Locums.

2. Includes agency staff. Figures not adjusted for change in nurses' working hours during 1980 (see Table 2).

3. On 1 April 1984, Operating Department Assistants transferred from the Ancillary to the Professional & Technical Staff Group. These figures will reflect this change.

4. Prior to 1982, these Authorities were managed by Boards of Governors.

5. Queen Charlotte's Hospital merged with Hammersmith SHA on 1 April 1984. Prior to 1982, Hammersmith Hospital was managed by Ealing, Hammersmith and Hounslow AHA(T).

6. Prior to 1 April 1984, this hospital was managed by a Board of Governors.
