HC Deb 25 July 1986 vol 102 cc653-4W
Mr. Meadowcroft

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether the effectiveness of the Royal Ulster Constabulary has been affected by the Stalker and Sampson inquiries.

Mr. Scott

This is a matter for the Chief Constable, but I understand he is satisfied that the inquiry itself is having little, if any, impact on the overall effectiveness of the Royal Ulster Constabulary. However he is concerned that ill-founded and distorted speculation and comment in the media about the inquiry could adversely affect the morale, and therefore the effectiveness, of officers other than those who are directly involved.
