HC Deb 25 July 1986 vol 102 c664W
Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (1) if he will make a statement on the riots at Portadown, County Armagh on 12 July;

(2) how many plastic bullets were used in the riots at Portadown on 12 July;

(3) how many persons were injured in the riots at Portadown on 12 July.

Mr. Scott

[pursuant to his reply, 17 July 1986 c. 619]: I deplore the violence which took place in Portadown on 12 July. This kind of behaviour is quite unacceptable in a responsible and civilised community.

During the disturbances the Royal Ulster Constabulary and Army were attacked on numerous occasions and 14 policemen were injured. Twenty civilians are also known to have been injured. One hundred and eighty six plastic baton rounds were fired, all by members of the Royal Ulster Constabulary.
