HL Deb 25 July 1986 vol 479 c545WA
Viscount Craigavon

asked Her Majesty's Government:

When they will designate under the Safety of Sports Grounds Act 1975 sport stadia and grounds in England and Wales to implement Recommen-dation 2 of the final report of the Popplewell Inquiry.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Home Office (Lord Glenarthur)

We have made an order which will shortly be laid before the House to designate a total of 52 sports grounds in England and Wales where there is accommodation for more than 10,000 spectators including 26 grounds used for association football, three used for rugby league, 16 used for rugby union and seven used for cricket. The effect will be to require the responsible persons in all cases to apply for safety certificates from the appropri-ate local authorities if they wish to admit spectators to the grounds. The order will come into operation on 23rd August. Its provisions have been drawn to the attention of the clubs concerned.
