When they propose to respond to the House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology's Report Marine Science and Technology.

My right honourable friend the Secretary of State for Education and Science has written today to you as the Chairman of the Committee's Sub-Committee II, with the Government's response which has been published as a White Paper (Cmnd. 9861).

The Government welcome the committee's report and accept that a mechanism for greater co-ordination across the breadth of marine science and technology is required. My right honourable friend has agreed therefore to sponsor the establishment of a Co-ordinating Committee on Marine Science and Technology (CCMST). He expects to announce the terms of reference and composition of the CCMST in the autumn.
