§ Mr. Cohenasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what research into alternatives to ear-punching of fatstock has been sponsored or carried out by his Department; what representations he has received on this practice; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Aspinwallasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he has any plans to adopt alternative methods to ear-punching on sheep, in the light of the recent report published by the Farm Animal Welfare Council on 21 May, concerning the welfare of livestock at markets.
§ Mrs. FennerOver many years, the Agriculture Departments have examined numerous possible alternatives to ear-punching, including branding, tagging, dyes and tattoos. None of these has so far proved acceptable as a means of marking which is permanent and fraud-proof, and which can be readily and humanely applied. We have received a number of representations on ear-punching. Most recently, the Farm Animal Welfare Council has submitted a report on the welfare of livestock at markets which deals with ear-punching. We are seeking comments from all interested organisations on their report and will respond in due course.
