Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners were considered by prison medical officers to be mentally ill within the criteria of the Mental Health Act on the most recent convenient date.

Mr. Mellor

On 31 March 1986 there were 305 prisoners in England and Wales who, in the opinion of the prison medical officer, were suffering from mental disorder of a nature or degree which would satisfy the criteria in the Mental Health Act 1983.

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners considered by prison medical officers to be mentally ill within Mental Health Act criteria left penal establishments after serving sentences or following a remand in custody in the most recent convenient year.
