§ 1984 Mr. Waddington

[pursuant to his reply, 11 July 1986, c. 285–6]: The information requested has now been collated and is set out below. It shows for each year, and for the first quarter of 1986,

(a) those against whom action was commenced as illegal entrants;
(b) those detained in custody as a result of such action; and
(c) those removed or departing voluntarily as illegal entrants

It should be noted that since action against those in (a) or (b) was not necessarily concluded during the relevant year, the figures at (c) do not necesarily correspond with those at (a) or (b).

The information is largely based on the type of passport held by the people concerned which will not in all cases indicate their country of origin. Some of the small number 41W of British overseas citizens, stateless persons and persons of doubtful nationality may not have been included in these figures.
