HC Deb 07 July 1986 vol 101 c25W
30. Mr. Stern

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will list those tidal power schemes equal to or larger in size than the larger of the two proposed Severn barriers which have been evaluated by his Department, and the amount of electricity each such scheme is now producing.

Mr. David Hunt

The Severn estuary is potentially the largest tidal resource in the United Kingdom and the second largest in the world. The Severn Tidal Power Group has considered two possible barrages in the estuary.

Large tidal schemes are also possible in the bay of Fundy in Canada, and in other sites around the world. The only substantial scheme in operation, however, is at la Rance in Brittany. This is rated at 240 MW and produces about 0.5 TWh of electricity per year.
