HC Deb 07 July 1986 vol 101 cc49-50W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what advice his Department gives to local education authorities about the qualifications of those who should teach sex education in schools.

Mr. Chris Patten

None. It is for the local education authorities and the schools themselves to ensure that teachers who contribute to programmes of sex education have appropriate professional and personal skills. The HMI discussion document "Health Education From 5 to 16" offers guidance on teaching approaches in this field.
