HC Deb 07 July 1986 vol 101 c73W
Mr. Kennedy

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what information he has as to how many non-British pharmaceutical companies have established a research or manufacturing capacity in the United Kingdom in the last five years; and, of this total, how many were Japanese.

Mr. Hayhoe

I regret that information is not available in the precise form requested. Most major pharmaceutical companies operating in the United Kingdom have been established here for more than five years. Many of them have made significant investments in recent years through replacement of or additions to existing research or manufacturing facilities. Information on the total value of pharmaceutical industry investment in the years 1979–1984 was contained in my reply to the hon. Member for Warrington, North (Mr. Hoyle) on 23 June at column64. No Japanese pharmaceutical company has invested in research or manufacturing capacity in the United Kingdom.
