HC Deb 07 July 1986 vol 101 c30W
Mr. MacKenzie

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many people in Scotland were employed in the microelectronics industry in 1979; and what is the latest comparable figure.

Mr. Rifkind

The latest estimates are that 43,800 persons were employed in the electronics industry in Scotland in mid-1985, compared with 41,700 in mid-1979. These estimates are based on information held in the regional data system. Although estimates from that source normally reflect the latest known industrial classification of plants, these estimates are derived from a special exercise in which plants have been given the classification appropriate to each year.
