HC Deb 07 July 1986 vol 101 cc35-9W
Mr. Meadowcroft

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list in the Official Report the numbers and types of dwelling so far designated under section 1 of the Housing Defects Act 1984 by each local authority.

Sir George Young

Twenty-two types of prefabricated reinforced concrete dwellings designed before 1960 have been designated nationally under the housing defects legislation. These are as follows:

  • Airey
  • Boot
  • Cornish Unit
  • Dorran
  • Dyke
  • Gregory
  • Myton
  • Newland
  • Orlit
  • Parkinson Frame
  • Reema Hollow Panel
  • Schindler and Hawksley SGS
  • Stent
  • Stonecrete
  • Tarran
  • Underdown
  • Unity and Butterley
  • Waller
  • Wates
  • Wessex
  • Winget
  • Wollaway

Information on the distribution of these types by local authority was obtained in 1983 and I am placing further copies of that material in the Library. My right hon. Friend has also recently designated the Smith house type nationally. We are assembling updated information from local authorities on the numbers of designated houses, including Smith, in both public and private ownership and I shall arrange for this too to be placed in the Library when it is available.

Mr. Meadowcroft

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list in the Official Report the amount of assistance so far committed by each local authority under section 1 of the Housing Defects Act 1984.

Sir George Young

Mr. Meadowcroft

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list in the Official Report the number and type of dwellings designated by each local authority under section 12 of the Housing Defects Act 1984.

Sir George Young

Local designations under section 559 of the Housing Act 1985—previously section 12 of the Housing Defects Act 1984 — have been made by Dudley borough council (for certain dwellings with steel slag, semi-raft foundations), and by Birmingham city council and Nuneaton and Bedworth borough council (for Smith houses with additional foundation defects). The number of houses potentially covered are as follows:

Privately owned Local authority owned
Dudley (steel slag etc.) 17 201
Birmingham* 545 979
Dudley (Smith etc.)* 78 284
Sandwell* 326 760
Nuneaton & Bedworth* 53 145
* The figures given are for all Smith houses in each authority's area. The local designation will apply only to those houses actually suffering the foundation defect.
