There were 3,791 redundancies affecting 10 or more employees notified to the Cambuslang and Rutherglen jobcentres in the period since 1 May 1979; the area covered by these jobcentres is slightly larger than the constituency. In the period 1 May 1979 to 31 May 1986, 550 new jobs and 1,970 safeguarded jobs were associated with offers of regional selective assistance to businesses in the Glasgow, Rutherglen constituency. In the period to 31 May 1986, 190 jobs were associated with offers of new regional development grant. It should be noted that some projects received both types of assistance.
