asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement on financial management initiative in Government Departments.

Mr. MacGregor

The financial management initiative emphasised the importance of managing public expenditure to give value for the taxpayer's money. With specific reviews and scrutinies, it is an unprecedented effort to get a better Civil Service. Improvements worth hundreds of millions of pounds a year have already been made with the help of civil servants. Work is continuing in each Department to make these changes more widespread and achieve the further improvements our record shows are to be had from sound financial management.
