asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what, from the latest available statistics, was the incidence of purchase of blank audio tapes in the United Kingdom, broken down by age group.

Official statistics on sales of audio tapes by age groups are not available. The following is from industry sources.

The most recent survey, carried out by National Opinion Polls on behalf of the Tape Manufacturers' Group gives the following breakdown of acquisitions, that is, purchases plus gifts, of blank audio cassette tapes by age group. The survey was carried out in late January/ early February of this year.
