§ Mr. Simsasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what progress he has made with plans to privatise the water authorities.
§ Mr. Ridley[pursuant to his reply, 25 June 1986, c. 309–11]: My consultations on privatising the water authorities have shown that, while preparations for their privatisation are well under way, more time is needed to prepare the necessary legislation. I have therefore concluded that we are unlikely to be able to introduce the Bill next Session.
I understand further powers may be needed to enable water authorities to prepare themselves for privatisation.
I reaffirm the Government's intention to proceed with water privatisation as soon as practicable.
