§ Mr. Heddleasked the Secretary of State for Social Services what measures he proposes to introduce to eliminate smoking by schoolchildren under the permitted age, following the report recently published by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys.
§ Mr. WhitneyThe Government are concerned that, despite the well-known risks to health, young people are continuing to take up smoking in large numbers. We are funding a £1 million advertising campaign to discourage the habit among teenagers and other initiatives are being taken by the Health Education Council. They include the distribution of new health education material on smoking to all secondary schools.
