asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the final assessment of the statistics for drunken driving offences over the Christmas and new year period.

Of 1,428 breath tests taken during the Christmas and new year period, 243 were positive. This compares with 230 positive from 415 tests in 1984–85.

Drunken driving does not occur only during the festive season, and the police have made it clear that they will enforce the law equally rigorously throughout the year.
