Sir John Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what matters within the internal jurisdiction of the Irish Government have been raised by Her Majesty's Government in the Anglo-Irish Intergovernmental Conference.

Mr. Scott

Policing in border areas in the Republic of Ireland has been discussed under article 9(a) of the agreement, and British and Irish Ministers have authorised officials to undertake further work on matters of mutual concern under article 8 of the agreement, including extradition, the possible harmonisation of areas of the criminal law and the search for measures to enhance public confidence in the administration of justice.

Mr. Bell

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland on how many occasions the joint chairman of the Anglo-Irish Intergovernmental Conference, Mr. Peter Barry, has called for a special meeting of the conference in accordance with article 3 of the Anglo-Irish agreement.

The joint chairman of the Intergovernmental Conference, Mr. Peter Barry, has requested a special meeting of the conference on one occasion. The meeting was held on 30 December.
