§ Mr. Bestasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what progress has been made towards a mandatory confidence-building régime requiring exchange of information about the size and movement of military forces in Europe, and providing for observers and on-site inspections.
§ Mr. RentonNATO Allies in 1984 tabled proposals at the Conference on Disarmament in Europe at Stockholm for measures covering the military activities mentioned by my hon. Friend. Agreement on procedural matters has permitted drafting to begin. We continue to hope that it will be possible to agree with other conference participants on practical confidence and security building measures.
