asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science when he expects to publish a White Paper on higher education.

Mr. Walden

The Government will be reviewing their policies in the light of responses to our Green Paper "The Development of Higher Education into the 1990s", and hope to be able to make a further statement of intentions in 1986.

40. Mr. Alton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what research has been carried out by his Department into the effect of changes in student income on the take up and retention of places in higher education.

Mr. Walden

The Department has carried out research at various times into the range of factors, including economic factors, which affect the demand for higher education. An account of the Department's research was included in "Technical Report to DES Report on Education Number 100", published in July 1984, a copy of which is available in the Library.
