HC Deb 16 December 1986 vol 107 c528W
Mr. Speller

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he intends to take further action to protect the welfare of sheep exported from the United Kingdom.

Mr. Donald Thompson

Further to the arrangements already in force, my Department has notified the exporters of sheep to France for slaughter or further fattening of two new conditions. Before a licence is issued they will have to provide details of the approximate time at which the animals will be fed and watered if the journey is likely to exceed 18 hours, in addition to details of the place which are already required. Within seven days of shipment they will also have to provide a written statement from the French importer confirming the time of arrival at the final destination and, where appropriate, confirming that the animals were fed and watered and giving the time at which this was done.
