Mr. Fatchett

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many deaths have been recorded in Leeds metropolitan district council during the last five years in which (a) hypothermia was given as the result of death, (b) hypothermia was noted as a contributory factor resulting in death for each of the following age bands (i) 0-two years, (ii) three to five years, (iii) six to 16 years, (iv) 17 to 64 years and (v) 65 years and over.

The numbers of deaths registered in the Leeds registration district (which is conterminous with Leeds metropolitan district) where hypothermia(a) was stated as the underlying cause of death and (b) was mentioned on the death certificate, irrespective of whether it did or did not appear as the underlying cause, by specified age-groups for the years 1981 to 1985 are given in the table.
