HC Deb 16 December 1986 vol 107 c476W
Mr. Willie W. Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on the latest crime statistics.

Mr. Mellor

In 1985 the police recorded 3.6 million notifiable offences in England and Wales, an increase of 3 per cent. over 1984. This was below the average increase (5.7 per cent.) over the years 1950–1985. In the 12-month period from October 1985-September 1986 the police recorded 3.8 million notifiable offences in England and Wales, an increase of 6 per cent. over the previous 12 months. This is in line with the average increase for previous years.
