HC Deb 03 December 1986 vol 106 c657W
86. Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the current state of relations with Poland.

Mr. Renton

Since the visit of my right hon. and learned Friend to Warsaw in April 1985 we have maintained an active dialogue with the Polish authorities in which our concern for human rights and the need for national reconciliation within Poland have played a major part. Together with our partners in the Twelve we welcomed the release of Polish political detainees in September as a step in this direction. A copy of that statement has been placed in the Library of the House. My right hon. and learned Friend had bilateral talks with the Polish Foreign Minister in September during the United Nations General Assembly and we hope to have further contacts with the Polish Government at ministerial level in the new year. I am glad to note that a group of right hon. and hon. Members are visiting Poland this week under the auspices of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
