§ 84. Mr. Freudasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will give details of plans to improve the teaching of technology in East Anglia; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mrs. RumboldThe place of technology in primary and secondary education is one of the aspects of national policy set out in the White Paper, "Better Schools" (Cmnd. 9469). However, local responsibility for curriculum policy and for the organisation and delivery of the curriculum rests in East Anglia, as elsewhere, with each local education authority, its governing bodies and head-teachers. The introduction of the technical and vocational education initiative in the region, and its extension as a national scheme from September 1987, is enhancing the place of technology in the curriculum. The proposed city technology college in Norwich will build on good practice in the maintained sector and will further strengthen the development of technology teaching in the area.
In the further and higher education sectors, colleges and universities in the area have benefited from a range of Government initiatives intended to improve the teaching arrangements in technological disciplines.
