§ 65. Mr. Gristasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the size and range of the British aid programme to Pakistan and the level of support provided.
§ Mr. Chris PattenWe expect to spend about £25 million in Pakistan this year. The main elements of the programme are in irrigation, flood control, agriculture and power.
During my visit last week, I visited the left bank outfall drain project, to which we are contributing £27 million, the Sukkar barrage rehabilitation project to which we are contributing £9.4 million, and the Allama Iqbal open university project. I also announced that we would be providing a further £15 million grant for projects in the power sector. We are also assisting Afghan refugees within Pakistan. I visited some of the camps and announced that the Government would be giving £3.5 million to UNHRC for its work with the refugees.
