HC Deb 01 December 1986 vol 106 c509W
Mr. Hayes

asked the Secretary of State for Transport, pursuant to the answer of 25 November, of the £13.4 million earmarked by Network South-East on Operation Pride in 1986–87, if he will itemise expenditure on the following (a) more capacity to relieve overcrowding, (b) more frequent train cleaning, (c) better services at telephone inquiry bureaux, (d) the painting of rolling stock and (e) modernisation of stations.

Mr. David Mitchell

I understand from British Rail that the expenditure on "Operation Pride" in 1986–87 can be itemised as:

£ million
More capacity 2
Train cleaning 1
Better inquiry bureaux service 1
Painting of rolling stock 1
Station renovation/cleaning 4
Other 4

This expenditure is additional to the very much larger sums that are spent by NSE on a continuing basis which will improve the quality of service, by replacing rolling stock, modernising stations and signalling, and improving passenger information systems.
