HC Deb 23 April 1986 vol 96 c166W
22. Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on progress to resolve the problems associated with houses in multiple occupancy.

Sir George Young

My Department is undertaking a major research project on houses in multiple occupation. The results of the first stage were announced in February; those of the main survey are expected later this year. I wish to see the outcome of this research before deciding whether further measures are necessary to deal with problems associated with houses in multiple occupation. In the meantime, I hope to publish in May a new circular on houses in multiple occupation about the wide-ranging powers already available to local authorities.
