21. Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will introduce legislation to remove the power of district auditors to initiate further proceedings against councillors for delays in setting a rate; and if he will make a statement.

55. Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he has any plans to seek to amend the legislation governing the role of district auditors; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Waldegrave

We have no plans to introduce legislation to change the role and powers of auditors appointed by the Audit Commission.
