asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the total number of persons detained in custody on 31 December 1985.

Mr. Mellor

On 31 December 1985 about 44,400 persons were held in prison department establishments in England and Wales. Details are to be found in table 1 of "The Prison Population in 1985", Home Office Statistical Bulletin 7/86.
