HC Deb 30 October 1985 vol 84 c521W
26. Mr. Willie W. Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on Her Majesty's Government's housing policy in the light of the recent report of the inquiry chaired by His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh on housing finance, a copy of which has been sent to him.

31. Mr. Ashdown

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on Her Majesty's Government's housing policy in the light of the report of the inquiry into british housing chaired by His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh.

Mr. Kenneth Baker

It remains our policy to encourage the maximum spread of owner-occupation, and the maintenance and improvement of the existing housing stock, while ensuring a vigorous housing association movement.

The Government also hope to introduce legislation to encourage the supply of more homes for renting in the private sector, but probably not during the lifetime of this Parliament.

We shall study carefully the report of the inquiry into british housing, bearing in mind that it deliberately adopted a longer-term perspective.
