Mr. Home Robertson

asked the Prime Minister if she will publish a table showing, on a directly comparable basis, the spending of the Scottish Office and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, respectively, on agricultural research and advisory services, with particular reference to the comparison between the relevant parts of the budget of the agricultural development and advisory service and of the Scottish agricultural colleges.

Expenditure by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food on research and development, excluding food science, fisheries and flood protection, totalled £90.4 million in 1983.84 of which expenditure by the Agricultural Development and Advisory Service was £39.8 million. Total comparable expenditure by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries in Scotland in 1983–84 was £27.8 million of which expenditure at the Scottish agricultural colleges was £6.8 million.

Expenditure by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food on advisory services provided by ADAS was estimated at £37.3 million in 1983–84. Expenditure by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries in Scotland on advisory services in agriculture in the Scottish colleges was £7.2 million.
