§ Mr. Allan Robertsasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what discussions have taken place between his Department and the Warrington and Runcorn development corporation concerning the possible sale of the Southgate housing estate to a private developer; and whether he is satisfied that the residents of the estate have been adequately informed and consulted about the proposals.
§ Mr. TraceyOfficials of my Department have had preliminary discussions with officers of the Warrington and Runcorn development corporation about proposals to 571W transfer ownership of the Southgate housing estate at Runcorn to a permanent landlord body, and to secure private finance for major improvements. Tenants had advance notice of the issue of a disposal prospectus earlier this year. Public meetings have bee held by the corporation to keep tenants informed of progress. Two offers have been received and these are now being considered and discussed with the prospective purchasers. When there is a firm proposal, tenants will be fully consulted. My right hon. Friend will not accept any proposal which does not include substantial protection of the tenants' existing rights.
