asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will make a statement about further appointments to, and relating to, the National Health Service management board.

Mr. Fowler

I have accepted the recommendation of the chairman of the NHS management board, Mr. Victor Paige, CBE, to appoint Mr. Ian Mills, a senior partner in Price Waterhouse, to the NHS management board as director of financial management.

Th role of the director will be to provide leadership in the initiation and implementation of improved financial planning and control throughout the National Health Service. Mr. Mills will take up his appointment, which is for three years, on 1 July. He will return to Price Waterhouse at the end of the three years.

I have also accepted Victor Paige's recommendation to appoint Mr. D. N. Idris Pearce, a senior partner in Richard Ellis, as part-time property adviser to the board. He will advise on the best use of land in line with health service needs and on the acquisition and disposal of property. This appointment will provide leadership and expertise in developing the property function in the National Health Service.
