§ Mr. Lathamasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what report he has received from the head of the British interests section in the Royal Swedish embassy in Tehran of the address made at Tehran university on 10 May by the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Hojjat Oleslam Ali Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani, relating to the Arab deputation visiting London, and in which he accused the United Kingdom of supplying arms to Iraq and wanting the continuation of the Gulf war; and if he will instruct the head of section to register a strong protest about this accusation.
§ Mr. LuceThe British interests section in Tehran has reported on this address. The Iranian authorities are kept fully informed of the United Kingdom's policy with regard to the Iran-Iraq conflict, both through the British interests section in Tehran and the Iranian embassy in London. It has been made clear that we wish to see the earliest possible end to the conflict and supply no items of defence equipment to either side which might significantly prolong or exacerbate the conflict.
