asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what has been the cost of the rating and valuation service in Scotland in each of the past five years.

On the basis of information provided by local authorities for the years 1981–82 to 1985–86 inclusive, current expenditure by regional and islands authorities on lands valuation and the collection of rates is as follows:
