HC Deb 25 March 1985 vol 76 c87W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what plans he has to monitor the level of prices in respect of spectacles after the proposed abolition of National Health Service glasses; and what criteria will be used in deciding which citizens, apart from students under the age of 19 years and social security claimants and children under the age of 16 years, will be eligible for assistance in meeting the cost of buying frames and lenses privately by means of the vouchers which will be available from his Department's offices.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

We wish to observe the development of the new market in spectacles before we take final decisions on the nature, scope and date of introduction of the voucher or cash aid system which will eventually replace the general ophthalmic services supply arrangements.
