Mr. Boyes

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the role and composition of the strategic performance analysis group in the scientific staff in his Department; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Butler

The strategic systems performance analysis and assessment group is part of the defence scientific staff of the Ministry of Defence.

It provides a monitoring and advisory role on certain scientific matters relating to the operation of the United Kingdom strategic deterrent.

Mr. Boyes

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the nature, composition and responsibility of the Defence Science Division 6, assessments, nuclear materials and wastes; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Butler

Defence Science Division 6, now designated Science (Nuclear), is part of the Defence scientific staff of the Ministry of Defence. It is responsible for providing scientific and technical advice on aspects of defence nuclear policy.
